Tim Drake, the third sidekick of Batman to go by the Robin identity, distinguished himself from the previous Robins by deducing Batman and Robin’s secret identities at the tender age of 9. His interest in Batman began when he and his parents attended a performance of the Flying Graysons that turned out to be the night Dick’s parents fell. Seeing their death and Batman’s arrival heavily affected him, and he became slightly obsessed with the crimefighter. His parents’ near-constant traveling left him with a lot of time to kill and a hole in his life that he filled by tracking Batman and Robin’s exploits through the newspapers.

After the second Robin’s death and Bruce’s descent into more brutal methods, Tim came to the conclusion that Batman needed a Robin around to act as a conscience. His first instinct was to seek out Dick and try to convince him to be Robin again, but when that failed, Tim picked up the Robin costume himself.
